BBC News "Doctors say they have used a genetically engineered herpes virus to treat successfully patients with head and neck cancer.

A London hospital trial of 17 patients found that use of the virus alongside chemotherapy and radiotherapy helped kill the tumours in most patients.

U.S. FDA staff eyes safety of Novartis' MS drug

Reuters: "WASHINGTON, June 8 (Reuters) - U.S. regulators expressed concern about potential side effects of Novartis AG's (NOVN.VX) (NVS.N) multiple sclerosis pill in patients most at risk for complications.

Food and Drug Administration staff scientists noted on Tuesday a 'clear dose-related effect' on the heart after the first dose of the drug, which Novartis aims to sell under the brand Gilenia. If approved, the drug could be the first pill to treat MS.

Side effects include heart problems, but there was little data on more vulnerable patients, the staff said, noting that further safety signals could crop up in those patients.

Angina is a very common disease that causes patients to have a narrowing of their coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that supply the heart with oxygen."

A joint report into the handling of the H1N1 outbreak, to be aired on Al Jazeera, has found that key scientists who advised governments to stockpile drugs, had previously been on the payroll of big drug companies.

The scientists were working for the World Health Organisation, whose decision to name the flu a "pandemic" is also coming under scrutiny from European investigators.

More than 12,700 people worldwide have died from H1N1 - but the virus has turned out to less deadly than feared.

However, the WHO initially urged rapid development of treatments and vaccines, fearing the virus had the potential to kill millions.

As a result wealthy countries spent billions on medicines which many believe are now unnecessary.

Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports on how big drug companies may have influenced the decisions that helped them profit from the H1N1 pandemic.

The Washington Post: "The worldwide eradication of smallpox in the mid-20th century was a remarkable public health achievement, but it may have set the stage for the HIV pandemic of the latter half of the century, researchers reported Tuesday.

Laboratory tests suggested that immunity to smallpox triggered by the smallpox vaccine can inhibit the replication of the AIDS virus, the researchers said in the journal BMC Immunology."

WebMD "Flibanserin, an antidepressant-like drug, makes sex more satisfying for some premenopausal women distressed over their low sexual desire.

The findings come from phase III clinical trials that drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim hopes will convince the FDA to approve flibanserin for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).

While HSDD is a controversial diagnosis -- some experts see it as the medicalization of what is for many women a relationship issue -- the 1,378 premenopausal women enrolled in the clinical trials were suffering distress over their lack of sexual desire."
